How to Understand Anime Without Subtitles
You don't need every word. You need the right ones, in the right order. In the first 12 episodes of 120 anime, 20 words make up 40% of the dialogue, 50 make up half, and 210 make up 67%. That turns "understand anime" into a path you can count, one checkpoint at a time.
The path
-
Hiragana
67% of the characters in anime subtitles are hiragana. Kanji are 23% and katakana 10%. Hiragana comes first, because everything else sits on it, and it unlocks Japanese subtitles.
-
20 words: 40%
The 20 most common words make up 40% of the dialogue. With them you catch the gist of a scene. Most are particles and grammar endings, like の, は, だ, and ない, that you've already heard a thousand times.
-
50 words: half
The top 50 make up 52%. An episode averages about 2,300 spoken words, and these 50 cover about 1,200 of them.
-
210 words: 67%
Learn 210 and you can follow along. That's 67% of the dialogue, and 68% counting character names.
-
200 verbs: 80% of the verbs
Verbs carry the action, and they have their own curve. Out of more than 6,000, the top 10 make up 43% of the verbs you'll hear, and the top 200 reach 80%.

How to climb it
Switch to Japanese subtitles as soon as you can read hiragana. When a line stops you, paste it into Yomikit: you get furigana and romaji over every word, and each word links to the Takoboto dictionary. Save the new words to a Takoboto list and review them as flashcards. Then keep watching. Every episode we watch is a free review of the words we just learned.
Start with the Top 10 Verbs in Yomikit →How long does it take?
There's no honest single number. It depends on how much you study and how much you watch. The checkpoints are better than a deadline: they tell you where you are, and each one is a share of every episode you can follow. Going from 20 words to 50 takes you from 40% to half. That's progress you can hear.
If you'd rather measure by JLPT level, here's how much of anime each level covers.
